Five displaced after Gwinnett County house fire

GWINNETT COUNTY — A neighbor helped five people safely escape a house fire in Suwannee Sunday. Firefighters were called to the home on Crescent Walk Way just after 5 p.m.

Kelly Combs watched the fire destroy her home of 12 years. Firefighters had to take out nearly every interior wall to put out hot spots.

It took four engines nearly an hour to fight the flames. Strong wind worked against firefighters and is partially to blame for significant damage to a neighboring home.

"There was a lot of wind because proximity radiant heat what caused damage next door," said Gwinnett County Fire Lt. Colin Rhoden.

Firefighters say neighbors noticed smoke and pounded on the door to notify the people inside.

An official cause has not been determined, but it appears the fire started on the left side of the house.

Combs says she'll contact their insurance company and rebuild. Everyone displaced by this fire has a place to go for now.
