FDA statement on Beneful

The Food and Drug Administration sent this statement about the complaints over Beneful dog food:

"The Food and Drug Administration cares about the well-being of both people and animals, and strives to ensure that the food Americans eat and feed their pets is safe, wholesome and properly stored and labeled. When there is a problem with an FDA-regulated product, we want to hear about it.

"These reports provide us with valuable information, and we follow up on every complaint we get. While we can’t answer questions about specific cases due to privacy concerns, we evaluate the information consumers give us as we determine what actions to take and what follow-up is needed to best protect our pets.

"In determining all of the possible causes for an issue, we also take into account the possibilities of previously undiagnosed disease, other foods the pet might have eaten, or exposure to toxins or chemicals around the home.

"It is important to note that the existence of a complaint does not mean the outcome was caused by the suspected product. Again, our hearts go out to any family experiencing a difficult time with their pet."
