Fannin County chief magistrate judge killed in motorcycle crash

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. — Chief Judge Ron Newton of Fannin County was killed Sunday and his wife Rita was critically injured in a motorcycle crash.
 
According to Fannin County Sheriff's Office, Newton and his wife were struck head-on by a vehicle along the Mineral Bluff Section of Ga. Highway 60 around 12:30 p.m.  Rita was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was identified as 60-year-old Larry Eugene Jones of Morganton, Ga.

Jones was not injured and is being held at the Fannin County Detention Center where charges are pending.

The Georgia State Patrol is conducting the investigation.
