Family wants charges in beating of mom, sister

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A family told Channel 2 Action News they want an arrest after an attack captured on a cellphone in which several people beat a mother and her daughter with baseball bats and sticks.

The incident took place at the Paradise East apartments on Bouldercrest Road in DeKalb County.

Devonta Liggons told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri the group attacked his mom in retaliation after his 13-year-old sister got in a fight with another teen at the complex the day before. Video from the cellphone shows a woman running toward the fight carrying a stick as a man in a pink shirt beat Danna Liggons on the head with a bat.

"That's a bat going to your face, going to your head," Devonta said. "She could have died."

Danna Liggons said she went outside to tell her kids to come in when suddenly a woman hit her. She's seen on the video struggling with the woman right before the others start hitting her with bats, along with her two daughters.

"My mama could have died, and I feel like ain't nothing being done about it," Devonta Liggons said.

According to the police report, Danna Liggons' daughter also described being hit by an "unknown male wearing a pink shirt." The family is worried without an arrest this could happen again to their family or another.

DeKalb police said they have reviewed the video and want help identifying the man in pink. Police said it's likely they will charge him in connection with the attack.
