Family of scam victim seeks help with funeral

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned a struggling mother of three, who lost all of her money in a scam, has died after her battle with cancer.

Relatives of 26-year-old Jessica Mondragon said she died Friday morning.

Channel 2’s Mark Winne spoke with the Rockdale woman in March 2011 after con men called and claimed she’d won the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. She wired $275 to the caller who told her the money was required as a processing fee.

Now Mondragon’s mother, Lawanna Blagg, says the family is not only grieving her daughter, but struggling to pay for Mondragon’s funeral scheduled on Wednesday.

An account has been set up at Wells Fargo bank to help with Mondragon’s funeral expenses. The name of the account is “Ride for Jessica.”
