Family of victim in Coweta County Taser death files lawsuit against deputies

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — The family of a man who died after being shocked with a Taser by Coweta County deputies is filing a lawsuit against the deputies and emergency medical technicians.

Body-camera video obtained by Channel 2’s Mark Winne shows Coweta County sheriff’s deputies struggling to subdue 32-year-old Chase Sherman in the back of an SUV along Interstate 85 in Nov. 2015.

RELATED STORIES:

Sherman’s mother said her son was “freaking out” and had taken a synthetic drug known as Spice.

The video shows deputies struggling with Sherman in the back of the SUV until he’s still, and they later realize he’s not breathing. Sherman was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Coweta County District Attorney Peter Skandalakis announced in October that he would not prosecute the case.

He said the incident was tragic, but not a criminal matter.
