CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS, Ga.,None - A retired firefighter found a missing mother and her children in a Chattahoochee Hills park late Thursday.

Chattahoochee Hills Fire Chief Ronnie Lyle said a 24-year-old woman, her 7-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son got lost walking the trails at Cochran Mill Park. Rescue crews spent hours searching for the family.

“They just got off on one of the smaller trails and got turned around. It got dark pretty quick on them,” he said.

The woman’s boyfriend was originally with the group.

“He said something about someone told him about some old graves over there, and they were going to look for them,” Chattahoochee Hills Police Chief Lewis Harper said.

When they became separated, the boyfriend called for help, Harper said. A retired firefighter who lives in the area helped search for the family on his four-wheeler and brought them out, police said.

Police said medics checked out the family, and they were not hurt.
