East Point home crushed by tree during Wednesday's storms

EAST POINT, Ga. — Relentless rain brought down trees throughout metro Atlanta.

One man escaped harm, according to witnesses, after a large tree came crashing down on his car on Fairview Road in northeast Atlanta.

Neighbor Rob Shields told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri he talked with the driver who said he pulled over to read a text message under the tree.

"He heard the tree cracking and put the car in gear and drove off and was able to escape at least," Shields said.

He said the man was stunned but unharmed.

No one was hurt when a massive tree came out of the ground and fell onto two homes on Clermont Avenue in East Point.

The roof of one home collapsed under the weight of the tree.

"I mean, I can't imagine how that would feel like coming home and seeing a tree that size on your house," neighbor Khobi Kyiamah told Viteri.

One of the homes was vacant and scheduled to be sold the next day.

The second home had damage to an upstairs bedroom, but neighbors said no one was in the room at the time.

Crews were scheduled to be out to remove the tree on Thursday.
