Duo breaks into man's home, throw sledgehammer at his head

CONYERS, Ga. — Rockdale County sheriff's investigators are looking for two men who broke into a house and attacked the homeowner with a sledgehammer.

Homeowner Ricky Green said he feels like a prisoner in his Conyers home on Poplar Street after the recent home invasion.

He almost didn't answer the door for Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes Thursday, even though he could see her using his new surveillance system.

“Even though you told me what you wanted, I was still pretty antsy about opening up that door,” Green told Fernandes.

Homeowner Ricky Green said he feels like a prisoner in own home after the recent home invasion.

Police said in the early morning hours of Feb. 26, two thieves broke into Green's home through a back window.

He told Fernandes he was stunned when he saw them standing at the foot of his bed.

Green tried to get out of bed to get his gun, but one of the suspects threw a sledgehammer at his head.

“I originally thought it was a gunshot, I really did,” Green told Fernandes. “I feel extremely lucky to be alive.”

The suspects stole Green’s house keys and truck keys but left the weapon behind.

Police traced the sledgehammer back to a Walmart store and determined who the suspects were after watching surveillance video of the men buying the sledgehammer.

Investigators are now asking the public’s help identifying the men because they were bold enough to return to Green's house a week later and steal his truck.

“They must have hot-wired it or something because the ignition was changed,” Green said.

They also tried to get back into the house but couldn't get in.

“You live in fear now?” Fernandes asked Green.

“Absolutely! For two days I carried a gun around every time I was outside,” Green said.

Green told said he was thankful for the Rockdale County deputies who showed up at his house just three minutes after he called 911 and got emotional when he explained to Fernandes how wonderful the police have been to him.

Anyone with information on the men is asked to call the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.
