Driver accused of hitting 4 vehicles in deadly crash

ATLANTA — One person is dead after a pickup driver lost control of his truck while traveling on Roswell Road in Buckhead, where he struck four vehicles, police said.

The accident happened at about 3:25 p.m. Friday as early rush hour traffic was building. At one point, all lanes on the busy stretch near Piedmont Road in the heart of Buckhead were shut down, police said.

Atlanta Police Officer John Chafee said the unidentified Toyota Tacoma driver was traveling northbound on Roswell Road when he hit a vehicle traveling southbound as he attempted to make a left turn at Piedmont.

After the hitting the southbound vehicle, the pickup driver hit a second vehicle, left the road and hit a parked vehicle, police said. He then re-entered Roswell Road and hit a fourth vehicle while crossing the street. He then crashed through a retaining wall, killing Calvin Sims, a 59-year-old man standing next to his vehicle, which was damaged by debris from the wall. Sims died at the scene, Chafee said.

The pickup driver, who was breathing and conscious, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, police officials said.

Police did not speculate on what may have caused the driver to continue to hit multiple vehicles after the initial crash.

The accident is under investigation and there are no charges pending at this time.
