DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — An armed robbery suspect is in the hospital after police say a gas station clerk turned the tables on him.
Surveillance cameras captured the shooting at the Chevron on Bankhead Highway in Douglasville late Wednesday night.
Video shows a man walk into the store with his hands in his pocket. He holds one side of the door and points the gun at the clerk, but the moment the suspect turns his head, the clerk reaches behind the counter for his own gun.
“The clerk was behind the counter and was able to retrieve his own handgun and fire rounds at the suspect,” Lt. Mark Edwards said.
The suspect ended up with one gunshot wound.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect lying on the sidewalk in front of the store.
Customers who know they clerk say they're just glad he’s safe.

“It was the right thing to do. I’m glad he’s OK. He did what he had to do,” customer Harry Daniels told Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Nicole Carr.
Friend Darryl Haley told Carr that he was with the clerk just before the shooting.
“There's too many people out here robbing people when they could be finding jobs. I mean, what's the deal? There's too many jobs out here to be robbing people,” Haley said.
The clerk took Thanksgiving Day off.
“Obviously he's shaken up. He's been very cooperative, very helpful in this investigation,” Edwards said.
The suspect still hasn't been identified and there's no word on the charges he will face.
