Diamond interchange work to cause weekend delays

DUNWOODY, Ga. — The I-285 Ashford Dunwoody Bridge will be closed starting Friday night through Monday morning as crews work on a new interchange.

Traffic authorities advise drivers to expect delays near Perimeter Mall.  Ashford Dunwoody Road will be down to one lane, and drivers will be detoured through the I-285 Perimeter Center Parkway Bridge due to construction of a crossover flow pathway.

The pathway, called a diverging diamond interchange, is designed to enhance traffic flow, the first of its kind in Georgia, officials told Channel 2’s Sophia Choi.

Dunwoody city leaders expect construction to significantly improve traffic in and out of the central perimeter market, metro Atlanta’s largest office district.

“When you think of a 20-25 percent enhancement in traffic flow, not only at this intersection, but other intersections in the state of Georgia, that’s going to be a huge benefit to all of us,” Dunwoody City Council member Denis Shortal said.

The I-285 Ashford Dunwoody Bridge will close Friday at 9 p.m. and open early Monday.

The new interchange is slated to open June 4.
