Father, 4-year-old son killed in DeKalb fire

LITHONIA, Ga. — A father and son were found dead in a car at a house fire in DeKalb County.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Wellborn Hills Place in Lithonia Tuesday night.

The DeKalb County fire chief confirmed two people were found dead at the home.

The victims have been identified as darryl Stewart, and his son, Nathan Stewart.

Stewart's wife, who arrived at the home as it was burning, is pregnant.

Channel 2's Eric Philips said they were found inside a car in the garage of the home.

Investigators said they believe the fire started in one car and spread to another, and then to the house.

Crews on the scene said the home is destroyed.

Neighbor Tamika Linder said she noticed the fire just before 8 p.m. "When I finally realized what was going on, I heard the fire sirens in the area," she said.

"I was standing close to her when [the medical examiner] arrived," she said. "When she saw him, she lost it."

Crews returned to the home overnight to douse hotspots.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, but the fire chief described the fire as "odd."
