Woman says she can't afford burial spot next to husband after payment plan slip

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County woman is the second to come forward this week saying the plot she paid for at a local cemetery may not be her's after all.

Now she's worried she won't be able to rest in peace next to her husband.

Brenda Jones told Channel 2's Justin Wilfon her husband was entombed in a mausoleum at the Washington Memorial Gardens mausoleum in Decatur when he died in 2006.

Jones began a payment plan to buy the spot next to him but after battling depression in the wake of his death, she missed a few payments.

Brenda Jones hopes to be buried next to her husband.

"I was having some difficulties relating with him gone, I was just so used to him,” Jones said.

That's when she said the cemetery told her she would need to start payments from scratch to keep the spot next to her husband and that she would lose the $1,800 she had already paid.

"I can understand you keeping a deposit or taking something but all of the 18-hundred dollars? And he said that's the way it works here,” Jones said.

She said she gave up her battle to get the money back until she saw our story on Wednesday, about another woman in a similar situation with the cemetery.

In all of her conversations with the cemetery, Jones said she never spoke with the cemetery's owner, Jack Frost -- So we gave her his number.

"I had some dealings with you all when my husband died,” Jones told Frost.

"Here's what we need to do, I'd love to sit down with you and go through everything from day one to day current,” Frost responded to Jones.

They have set up a meeting for next week.

Wilfon also spoke with the Secretary of State's office today. They're looking into what if any help they might be able to provide for these two women.
