Teen jumped, beaten leaving HS football game

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A teenager's father is outraged after a group of people jumped his son while the teen was leaving a football game.

“When I got in the hospital and I saw my son laying in the bed with blood coming out of his head, his nose, and his eyes, he couldn't move,” Gregory Maye said. “A few more minutes God knows what may have happened."

Police say more than a dozen young men viciously attacked the 17-year-old for no reason.

“Both eye sockets were fractured. You could see the blood coming out of his eyes. Also, he had a broken nose and a gash on his forehead,” Maye said.

It happened on Saturday after a football game at Hallford Stadium between Arabia Mountain High School and MLK High School.

Maye says his son, a senior at Arabia Mountain, was leaving the game with a friend when he was approached by a group of about a dozen people in the parking lot.

“They surrounded him and the next thing he knows is that somebody punched him and he hit the ground,” Maye said.

That's when police say the others jumped in and started punching, kicking, and stomping on the boy's head.

“(He’s) very fortunate a parent ran over and saw the attack,” Maye said.

The witness called police and the group took off running. The victim was rushed to the hospital. %

“There should have been security all over the place, (but) there was no security in the back area,” Maye said.

DeKalb school officials say there were 17 officers assigned to cover the game, which had approximately 2,500 people in attendance.

Maye says his son could have ended up blind, if not dead.

“The magnitude of those injuries could have been fatal,” he said.

Police say they don't have a clear motive, but the teen's cellphone and wallet were stolen in the attack.

Police say they plan to  step up security at football games moving forward.
