Police: Home invasion suspect tried to burrow into apartment

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A SWAT situation has ended in Brookhaven after a two gunmen forced their way into an apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

SWAT was called around 4:30 a.m. to assist Brookhaven police at the complex on 1750 Briarwood Road.

Authorities tell Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach that two armed men forced their way inside the apartment and demanded money. A woman inside called 911 and escaped.

One suspect has been taken into custody. A few hours later, the other suspect was arrested.

Officers busted out the windows, used flash bangs and used a robot to get inside the apartment.

Gehlbach got a look inside the apartment and saw that it was trashed and flooded. Police said the gunman tried going up through the air-conditioning to the unit above and tried to get into the apartment next door by going through the wall under a bathroom sink.

A neighbor said the scared mother and baby come to her back door for help.

“In the whole time I've been staying here, nothing like this has happened. Or course the kids trying to go to school. Just been a crazy morning, it really has,” said neighbor Katrina Noble.

The DeKalb charged 19-year-old Tyreun Gaines and 30-year-old Antoine Coon with home invasion, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.
