Car crashes into DeKalb County family's home after ice accident

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — An SUV lost control on icy roads and slammed into a house with a family inside in DeKalb County.

It was a snow day Wednesday so the kids and parents were home. They told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes they heard a loud crash and they thought a tree fell on their home – but when they came outside, they saw a car had slammed into their garage and left a huge hole.

The Madgett family said they’re counting their blessings. No one in the home was injured and for that, they’re crediting their cars that were parked in the garage.

“So had it not been for the cars, the car would’ve come straight through our kitchen,” said Shawn Madgett.

And that’s where the entire family was.

“It sounded like a car accident going on in front of our house and I was really scared,” said Korie Madgett.

Police said it started up at the top of the hill on Gateway Boulevard, a driver said that another driver slid on some ice and crashed into him. First, he hit a Georgia Power transformer, then some parked cars, a water main, took out a light pole and continued to slide down the hill.

The SUV finally stopped when it crashed into the house.

“Our cars are damaged and our walls were damaged but at least everybody is safe,” Shawn Madgett said.
