25-year-old woman ID'd in deadly shooting that ended at gas station

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police have released the name of a woman killed in a shooting that ended at a gas station in DeKalb County.

Police tell Channel 2's Nicole Carr that Avery Birthrong, 25, was shot and killed in an incident that started in Gwinnett County early Tuesday morning.

Investigators believe Birthrong was a passenger in a car with her boyfriend and another man and was shot and killed while they were driving. Police say the bullet came through the back window from another car. They do not know if the car was moving or stopped at the time.

Police said the shooting happened in the area of Rockbridge Road around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Birthrong's boyfriend then pulled into a BP gas station about two miles down the road where they called 911.

Both men inside the car at the time were taken to Gwinnett police headquarters and are being questioned by detectives.

Police do not know whether the car was targeted, if it was a case of road rage or what else may have led up to the shooting.

Carr arrived at the gas station on Lilburn-Stone Mountain Road in Stone Mountain just before 6 a.m., and saw several police officers putting up crime tape at the location.

A man police say was a witness to the shooting was handcuffed and put in the back of a Gwinnett County patrol car at the gas station.
