Father pleads for prayers for little girl on life support

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — An 8-month-old Brookhaven child is on life support after investigators say the child’s mother and the mother's boyfriend brutally abused her.

Court records show baby Kamonie Love had injuries on her legs, buttocks, chin and arms, as well as multiple rib fractures and a possible skull fracture. A legal document says mother Shavone Whitehead admitted using a belt on occasion to punish the child.

Edward Wilson and Whitehead have been charged with cruelty to children and aggravated battery.

Damarrio McCoy is Kamonie's father. Like the infant, he too is an innocent victim in all this.

“I want her to be able to do things like any other parent would. You wanna see your kid grow,” McCoy told Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne. “I have all my wants, but I don't know God's will. I don't know God's will. I’m here, I believe and I trust in God for everything. I just want everybody to pray with me.”

Investigators gave Winne the 911 call made by Wilson from a Microtel motel in Brookhaven, when the infant was unable to breathe.

“We have an 8-month-old that, she made a loud gurgling noise and then when we went to check on her she's not responsive. She doesn’t appear to be breathing,” Wilson told the 911 operator. “Her mother's doing CPR."

Throughout the 911 call, Winne said he could hear what sounded like a woman's sobs or sniffling in the background.%

A court record indicated Kamonie was unable to breathe on her own and was put on a ventilator at a nearby hospital.

“The detective handling this case has been in law enforcement 24 years and he has said this is probably one of the worst incidents of child abuse or child cruelty that he has seen,” said Officer Carlos Nino, with the Brookhaven Police Department.

“I want justice,” McCoy told Winne. “If God so decides to take my baby I have to respect Him, you know. I won’t show any resentment, or any hate.”

DeKalb County Public Defender Lee Ann Lynch, who is representing Wilson, told Channel 2 Action News, "My client maintains his innocence and we plan to zealously fight the charges against him."

Nino says Whitehead basically denied she was criminally responsible.

“I pray that God's will be done, because the doctors say that they can’t do nothing. Not at this point, but God can. It's always been God. That's the only one that I can lean on,” McCoy said.
