1 dead after shooting on I-20

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — One person is dead after an interstate shooting during rush hour traffic.

Now, police are asking for help trying to track the driver of the other car.

Detectives say someone shot the man while driving on Interstate 20 near Panola Road in south DeKalb County.

The victim was identified as Jonathan Williams, 19, of Villa Rica. He died at the scene.

Landry Freeman drives on I-20 eastbound from downtown Atlanta to Conyers most days of the week, but Tuesday evening was different. He nearly ran out of gas, sitting behind a deadly shooting scene.

"That was really bad. That's the worst I've seen,” Freeman told Channel 2’s Rikki Klaus. “That is really sad. A shootout on the interstate? That is really sad."

Initially, dispatch told Channel 2 Action News that two people were shooting at each other while driving down I-20 eastbound. DeKalb County police at the scene told Klaus that is still under investigation.

The shooting happened just past Panola Road, around 5:30 p.m.

Sharon Lundy got caught in the gridlock two hours later.

"Atlanta's crazy. People are crazy. Let's just try to get along," Lundy told Klaus.

NewsChopper 2 flew above the scene showing a silver Malibu riddled with bullets.

Investigators told Klaus the driver was shot, crashed into the white truck and died.

"Unfortunately, it's bad enough that you can't walk the street, but on a highway, while you're driving? Unbelievable," said driver Stephen Winder.

Investigators say the other driver sped away, and they're still searching for that person. They ask anyone who witnessed the shooting to contact the DeKalb County Police Department right away.
