Pit bulls roaming in neighborhood cause concern for local day care

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County day care owner says pit bulls are running loose, and she’s worried someone will get hurt.

Channel 2’s Craig Lucie went to the day care in Decatur Wednesday afternoon, and she showed him surveillance video of the dogs running through her front yard.

Amaris Washington takes her 1- and 2-year-old children to the home day care and told Lucie she is worried about these dogs running loose.

“One of those dogs did come up to my car while I was putting my kids inside, and I’m very concerned about their lives and about their limbs everything,” said Washington.

The day care’s owner didn’t want to be on camera but showed Lucie several video clips of the dogs near her home. She says they’ve jumped the fence where she has a play area for the kids.

“If I have to take them outside, I can’t protect them with the dogs out running around jumping a fence,” said the day care’s owner, who didn’t want to be identified.

She also told Lucie she has special-needs children who are dropped off by the school bus every day.

“One of the dogs attempted to run after the special-needs child while the parent was leaving,” said the owner.

Lucie went to the home where she told him the dogs live. A man who answered the door wouldn’t come outside to speak on camera. He did tell Lucie that he only has one dog. He said they captured two dogs and put them in their backyard and animal control came and got them. The day care owner says that’s not true.

“We have some dogs in the backyard, but the pound came and got them and they were not ours,” the man told Lucie.

A DeKalb County spokeswoman told Lucie that an animal control officer would be dispatched to the neighborhood Wednesday evening.

She said they did pick up a shepherd mix the day after the day care’s surveillance cameras caught the dog running through the yard.

The spokeswoman said they would put a notice on the door where the dogs where spotted.
