No water, A/C at hotel spoils several family reunions

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Guests at a DeKalb County hotel spent most of the day without water or air conditioning.

Channel 2's Rikki Klaus learned that hundreds of guests were at the Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia in Dunwoody for family reunions.

The water and air conditioning at the hotel went out Saturday morning. It was returned more than 12 hours later.

The hotel general manager told Klaus that an internal pipe burst.

People from four family reunions spilled into the lobby and outside the hotel.

Lacy George, the organizer of the Underwood Family Reunion, said she wished hotel staff would have communicated the issues sooner and more thoroughly.

"It's terribly hot outside, so inside it's even worse. It smells in the hotel. We're thirsty. We need to use our bathroom facilities," she said.

Portable toilets were placed outside the hotel.

One guest said the loss of air conditioning and water was inconvenient for the elderly members of her family and those in wheelchairs.

"A lot of them take medication and not being able to have water and A/C in high temperatures really does affect their health," Sheri Jones said.

The hotel gave out water, popsicles and ice cream as crews worked to fix the pipe.

The Jones family was concerned their Saturday night banquet at the hotel might not happen, but they were not disheartened.

"We're a very resilient family. We can always bounce back and that's part of who we are," one family member said.

The hotel sent a statement which said:

The hotel water line is now operational and our water and air conditioning systems are in service. We recognize the degree of inconvenience this incident created for our guests whom we value so greatly. That's why we will continue to make this right - from securing rooms at neighboring hotels for guests that still wish to relocate at no cost to them, as well as offering a refund for this evening's stay and any banquet services impacted by this disruption. We are sorry and apologize to all guests who have been affected by this event
