Neighbors on alert after man is shot and killed in east Atlanta

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a man early Monday morning in the basement apartment he rented off Phillips Road.

“It was like three shots bam, bam, bam," neighbor Ed Grant told Channel 2’ Liz Artz.

Ed Grant told Channel 2’s Liz Artz Monday he had just arrived home from his job as an Uber driver when he heard the gunfire. Patrick Huff saw the massive police scene that came soon after.

“I asked the officer what was going on. He said a 30-year-old male just got killed over here," said Patrick Huff.

Detectives told Artz someone shot and killed a man who was renting a room in the basement of a home off Phillips Road. Right now they say there is no motive, and no suspect description.

“Whether it was one suspect or multiple suspects we still don’t know, but we are working leads," said DeKalb police Lt. Lonzy Robertson.

Robertson said evidence was left behind at the scene and investigators are working several leads. Artz saw the homeowners outside several hours after the shooting, they declined an on camera interview. Police said they are the ones who called 9-1-1.

“They heard some gunshots (and the) homeowner rushed down stairs to see what was happening actually access from outside found victim deceased in basement," said Robertson.

Police are being tight-lipped about what they know. They told us there is more to this murder than what they can tell us right now. Neighbors told Artz this type of activity is happening more and more off Phillips Road.

“It got rough around here last week, guy got robbed corner coming from the bus stop," said Huff.

DeKalb police are asking anyone who may know anything about this homicide to give them a call right away.
