Man rams police car trying to flee from traffic stop

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators say a man is in the hospital following a wild string of events after he tried to flee from a traffic stop.

Officers say they were forced to shoot along Flat Shoals Parkway during the incident.

Channel 2’s Matt Johnson talked to investigators late Monday night who told him that they were processing three different scenes.

Police told Johnson the whole thing started near Flat Shoals and Clifton Springs Road. That's where police say they pulled over a car driving recklessly into oncoming traffic.

The driver, 24-year-old Alton Lumpkin, was driving recklessly and into the path of oncoming traffic around 7 p.m., police said.

According to police, the officer went up to the car after it stopped at a nearby car wash.

That's when the driver is accused of trying to run over the officer. That officer then opened fire but missed.

Johnson shot cellphone video of a house a quarter mile away where police say the car flipped over multiple times and crashed. The suspect injured is arm in the crash.

Police say they recovered a gun.

The passenger in the car told police he was not willingly participating in the incident, and he was released.

Officers say the incident is still an ongoing investigation but police say the responding officer had a difficult task on a crowded street.

“I think the officers did a great job preventing any kind of damage, and any injuries to any pedestrians,” said Sgt. Steven Dean with the DeKalb County Police Department

Police say as soon as Lumpkin is out of the hospital, he will go to jail on charges that include aggravated assault on an officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a number of traffic charges.
