Grandfather stabbed 7 times by 'dangerous' man hiding inside truck, police say

A 58-year-old grandfather is recovering after being stabbed during an attempted carjacking, according to police.

Officials with the Decatur Police Department told Channel 2's Matt Johnson the victim, identified as Jeff Gwinn, was approached by a stranger last Thursday, and things went from bad to worse.

Gwinn is a deliveryman, and his work truck was parked at a mattress store on College Avenue in Decatur when he noticed someone was inside the truck.

Police said the man inside tried to take Gwinn's truck but ended up stabbing him seven times with a knife before walking away.

Decatur police have released a picture of the suspect -- identified as 29-year-old Jordan Christopher Brown -- and they want to take him off the streets.

Gwinn's family members told Johnson they were not sure at first if Gwinn would survive when they found out what happened.

“We were really scared about that,” Gwinn’s daughter Jamila Cleveland said. "I know he's having a hard time. He's in a lot of pain, but it's such a blessing that he's here."

Gwinn's family said he has seven stab wounds across his neck, arms and legs.

"The way he was cut, they're saying it was someone that had military experience," Cleveland said.

Gwinn's family said he was able to get up and follow Brown to the Avondale MARTA station before he lost consciousness.

Police consider Brown armed and dangerous.

"If we can get him off the street, then that would be great. That's a help to the community," Cleveland said.

But Gwinn's family said no one is angry because they suspect that Brown is homeless and they want him to get help before he hurts someone else.

"He wasn't mentally aware of what he just did," Cleveland said.
