Doraville police K-9 dies weeks after he was stabbed in mouth

Tryko

DORAVILLE, Ga. — Doraville police are mourning the death of a hero K-9.

Tryko died on Monday after a long career with the police department.

Tryko was injured earlier this year while helping capture a suspect. He was stabbed in the mouth as he moved in to apprehend the suspect. Despite sustaining a number of punctures and lacerations to his tongue and mouth, Tryko had appeared to be on the mend and his handler, DPD Lt. Jason Deyette, had hoped to return Tryko to service in the near future.

But it wasn't meant to be.

Lingering spinal and neurological issues caused Tryko's health to decline significantly in October. At first, Tryko showed signs of improvement and the veterinarians were optimistic about his prognosis.

However, recently Tryco suffered serious setbacks.

After consulting with veterinarian specialists, all involved made the decision that Tryko be euthanized.

“I have had the privilege of working with many K-9s from federal, state, and local agency K-9 corps from the southeastern United States and K-9 Tryko was always one of the best I had worked with,” said Doraville Mayor Donna Pittman.  “He will be missed by this agency.”

Tryko had been with Doraville police for 10 years.  He assisted almost every single federal, state, and local law enforcement agency in metro Atlanta (including DEA, FBI, ICE, US Marshal’s Service, GBI, Chamblee, Dunwoody, DeKalb, Norcross, Atlanta, Sandy Springs); helped with approximately 600 drug seizures of varying amounts; and assisted with approximately 700 apprehensions, of which about 70 percent were felony apprehensions. A memorial service will be planned.
