Thieves cut hole in roof of gun range to steal guns, ammunition

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are looking for some burglars who climbed on the roof of a gun range, cut a hole in the roof and stole about 20 guns and ammunition.

Wednesday morning, managers at the Range, Guns & Safe gun range and store in Tucker arrived at work and disarmed the alarm system only to find broken glass all over the floor.

“They knew exactly where to come in,” said gun owner Ron Moon.

Managers also found a collapsible ladder underneath a small hole in the roof.  %

Investigators told Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes that the burglars came in through that hole and took about 20 guns from a glass case. Police said the burglars also took more than 1,000 bullets.

“That's dangerous, definitely,” said customer Radek Pavlas.

NewsChopper 2 flew over the store Wednesday morning as ATF agents processed the scene.

Investigators also took surveillance video that shows the entire burglary.

Moon told Fernandes that he uses the range often and said managers showed him the surveillance video.

He told Fernandes it looked like the burglars knew exactly where to go. %

“They hugged the wall, they knew exactly where the motion detectors were. They only went to one case of guns because they knew if they went to any other cases of guns they would've set off the motion detectors."

After ATF investigators left, the gun range owner used the ladder to get a closer look at the hole in the roof.

Moon told Fernandes the manager fell off the ladder and broke his leg. He left in an ambulance.

Police said there were three burglary attempts at the range before Wednesday.

Managers said they made security improvements and were in the process of installing more cameras, but that just wasn't enough to keep the determined burglars out.
