DeKalb County teacher loses control, crashes through fence near school

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — There were scary moments at a DeKalb County high school when an employee lost control of her car and landed in a ditch near the school.

Channel 2's Audrey Washington learned that the employee had some sort of medical emergency, right before she drove through a fence and landed in a ditch.

NewsChopper2 flew over the site at Southwest DeKalb County High School off Kelley Chapel Road.

A crane was brought in to pull that car from the ditch. Paramedics were able to safely get to the school employee.

The victim was taken to the hospital as a precaution and is expected to be OK.

Washington spoke with a man whose house is just steps from where that car finally came to a stop. He said this all could’ve been much worse, considering students often use the area as a pass through to school.

“The kids do cut through the woods. They call it the pass way to try to get to school on time, but yeah you coming through the woods and a car coming at the same time, that could’ve been dangerous,” said neighbor Richard Boyd.

Barbara Price, a guardian to one of the students at the school, wondered why she never heard about the crash from school officials.

"We didn't hear anything about it," Price said. I haven't heard anything."

Price also said she has a medical condition herself and is just thankful the employee survived.

"I could understand if it's a medical issue that's why it's important to take your medicine because this could happen," Price said. " I pray that she is OK."

The school district said they will be sending out notifications to parents Monday night about the incident.
