DeKalb County parents outraged over post-Memorial Day graduation dates

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County schools have delayed graduation ceremonies for some high school seniors. That means it could be after Memorial Day and into June before students get their diploma.

This plan has some people outraged.

Graduation ceremonies will be held between May 28 and June 2.

“Oh, my goodness, obviously the summer breaks, people going on vacations,” said parent Johnny Oliver.

Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools and DeKalb County Schools were forced to find alternative locations after Georgia World Congress Center announced conventions would take the space around graduation time.

In October, DeKalb’s superintendent, Dr. Stephen Green stated they were reviewing options. We now know ceremonies will happen at Georgia World Congress Center, but after the Memorial Day holiday.

DeKalb county leaders said the goal is find a single venue that can hold everyone's families.

Atlanta Public Schools struck a deal with Georgia Tech to hold its graduation ceremonies inside its basketball arena and Fulton County Schools has secured several venues, including Infinite Energy Arena and Verizon Amphitheater.
