Customers say they weren't told about dozens of break-ins at storage facility

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Customers at a storage facility in Tucker said dozens of units have been broken into over the last few days.

They said thieves pried open doors and broke the locks at Public Storage on Montreal Circle. The thieves got in by cutting through a fence in the back.

Jeremy Brogdon is one of the victims and said thieves took his electronics and sentimental items that his dad gave him. He believes Public Storage should have done a better job letting customers know about recent thefts.

“They said that their policy is that they will only notify customers whose units were broken into and it’s happened three times in the past month by my count,” he said.

“It took them two and a half days to alert us to what actually happened,” customer Tom Abraham said.

Abraham said if he knew about the other thefts he would have been able to better protect his property.

Channel 2's Carl Willis spoke briefly to the facility's manager, who referred him to the corporate office in California.

He did not get a call back to answer his questions about the lack of working security cameras and how thieves could gain access by cutting through a chain-link fence.

“It’s irresponsible. I mean, these are people’s possessions that they worked for,” Brogdon said.

Victims said they were given forms to file insurance claims, but they will have to pay a deductible. Some said money can't replace many of the items they lost.
