Campaign urges drivers to stay back from crosswalks

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Drivers around a busy area of metro Atlanta are getting a reminder to stay back from crosswalks.

Community improvement districts are teaming up with cities off of Interstate 285 to make the area more walkable.

“(We are teaming up) with the city of Brookhaven, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody to support us,” said president of the Perimeter Community Improvements District, Yvonne Williams.

Their campaign has the message, “Be kind. Stay behind the line.” %

Flashing messages around Perimeter Mall warn drivers, “Don’t block the box.”

Drivers who don’t obey face up to a $500 fine and points on their driver’s license.

Perimeter Mall manager Bill Baker said he thinks a kinder approach will improve traffic headaches that affect everyone.

“Sometimes they end up getting stuck here and when it’s time for the next one to go, they can’t move and tempers flare," he said.

Big X's to remind drivers to stay back will be painted in the next few weeks in the middle of at least five other intersections:

  • Parkside Place at Perimeter Summit
  • Peachtree Dunwoody Road at Johnson Ferry Road
  • Peachtree Dunwoody Road at Abernathy Road
  • Peachtree Dunwoody Road at Lake Hearn Drive
  • Ashford Dunwoody Road at Ravinia Drive
