Police ask residents to register cameras

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Brookhaven police are calling on residents to help them in the fight against crime.

The department launched Operation Plugged In to ask residents and business owners who own surveillance to register them with police so that detectives know where any potentially helpful video can be found.

The operation was launched late last year, but police are now pushing more people to get involved.

“We’re mainly interested in the cameras that are pointing outside of the residence or business, a parking lot or an alleyway,” Brookhaven police Officer Carlos Nino said.

Police said registering cameras will cut down on the time they spend canvassing for video.

“If we can point a camera in the right direction and assist them in any crime activity or detective work, it’s to all of our advantage,” bike shop owner Eric Hunger said.

Police said the program does not give them full or continuous access to the cameras, and participants are partnering with them for when crime happens in the area.

“We’re not going to be live monitoring these cameras in one of our offices upstairs,” Nino said.

Police said they’re giving participants yard stakes and decals that could also deter criminals.

They believe if more people sign up it will be better for the city.

“The better for us because we have more resources to tap into and, again, it’s zero money from the city,” Nino said.
