Apartment building severely damaged by fire

DECATUR, Ga. — Firefighters fought through intense flames and thick smoke Sunday night to make sure everyone got out of an apartment fire.

Fire officials told Channel 2’s Rikki Klaus the flames are out but firefighters are watching another danger.

Cara Davis had just unloaded groceries inside her Woodland Hills Apartment in Decatur Sunday evening, when she smelled something strange.

"I hear someone scream, 'Fire, someone call 911,' and so I immediately shot up because what do you do? What's happening?" Davis told Klaus. "Just scary."

She called 911 and got out of the apartment. Everyone in the building evacuated, including a baby, a dog and a cat.

"Everybody started working fast to get everybody out of the building," Davis said.

Outside Davis saw flames shooting out of the window of a first-floor apartment.

DeKalb County firefighters arrived, went inside and hosed it down.

"They got here quick, and they got a very quick knockdown," a DeKalb County Battalion Chief told Klaus.

The battalion chief said the apartment was filled with stuff, providing plenty of fuel for the flames.

"There's a lot of items in there. It's very crowded in there," the battalion chief said.

“I’m still in shock, but we're all thankful everybody got out safe," Davis told Klaus.

Firefighters say the resident of the apartment on fire wasn't home when it happened.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters say they will be checking the apartment building regularly throughout the night to make sure the fire doesn't rekindle.
