4th-grader hit by car waiting for bus

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A fourth-grader is recovering after getting hit by a car while waiting for his school bus Thursday morning.

The collision happened on North Decatur Road, near North Indian Creek, in DeKalb County.

Queens Powell told Channel 2's Audrey Washington she heard screams just after the driver of a car swerved out of control, and hit the young boy and a woman as they waited for the bus.

“There was one woman, and her son couldn’t walk, so she was dragging him in the street,” Powell said.

Witnesses said after the driver hit the people, he crashed into a pole. The driver, the child and the woman survived.

“It was just so fast,” Powell said. “The little boy, his leg was broken. His arm was broken. There was another woman, and her leg was broken.”

The crash happened across from the DeKalb County School System Building. Parents told Washington that that stretch of road is known for speeding.

They said they want the bus stop changed before someone else gets hurt.

“My main concern is to get this area changed over here, and get a speed limit posted,” one parent said.

DeKalb County Schools said, “We’ll be conducting an investigation of this incident to determine the cause and any possible remediation.”
