DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Carlo Simpson, of DeKalb County, was sentenced to two life sentences for shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend, Shikhira Dunson, on Feb. 18, 2013, in Decatur.
Dunson was approximately 22 weeks pregnant at the time of her death at the hands of Simpson.
On Friday, March 6, a Dekalb County jury found Simpson guilty of felony murder, feticide, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.
"A mother was taken from her son without warning, and without cause," said District Attorney Robert James. "This was no accident. It was a deliberate and reckless act that ended with the death of a young mother and her unborn child."
The two-year-old son of Dunson lives with his grandmother, Johnnee Dunson. "His first birthday, his first steps, his first words were moments not shared with his mother," said JohnneeDunson.
During the sentencing hearing, Dunson's mother addressed the court. "There's not one single day that goes by that I don't have a thought of my daughter," said Johnnee Dunson.
James stresses the importance of domestic violence awareness among families. Anyone experiencing domestic violence is urged to call the Women's Resource Center's 24 hour hotline at 404-688-9436.
