Traffic stop leads to 1 of the biggest drug busts in Georgia history

ATLANTA — Two undocumented men from Mexico now face federal charges after what agents are calling one of the largest drug busts in Georgia history.

Channel 2's Aaron Diamant was at the federal courthouse in downtown Atlanta when agents showed off some of the drugs, money and guns seized.

More than 25 kilos of heroin worth up to $2 million wholesale, plus methamphetamine, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and an AK-47.

It was all brought in after a traffic stop by Georgia State Patrol earlier this week in Gwinnett County. A K-9 unit from Lilburn found drugs in the car, which led them to a stash house in Lawrenceville. Two undocumented men from Mexico now face charges.

DEA Atlanta’s special agent in charge called the big bust a game changer.

“Unfortunately, what this also represents to us and the men and women in law enforcement is the scope and sophistication of the organization that we are going to identify, target and destroy, and we’ll put them in jail,” said SAC Robert Murphy.

U.S. Attorney BJ Pak called the bust a big win, but just more confirmation of the growing opioid crisis in Georgia.

“What you see here today is an increased commitment to enforce the law, prosecute those who break it and address the growing crisis in this district,” Pak said.

Lilburn police officer Almedin Ajanovic praised his K-9 partner, Ajax who first found some of the drugs in the car.

“Honestly, I can't even describe the feeling, but it all reflects back on training,” Ajanovic said.
