Crews rush to finish roundabout at Cobb County high school entrance

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — School starts Monday in Cobb County but the one and only entrance to a school is not ready.

Crews are working around the clock on a huge roundabout at Pope High School.

“With the road being closed, that’s been a huge inconvenience. It’s been happening for months now,” said Mike Jacobs, a resident in the area who has had a front row seat of the construction.

Crews have labored, often through miserable weather, to finish the huge roundabout at the entrance.

“It’s just a real headache of having everything there. The past few days they’ve been working through the night and that’s been keeping us up,” he explained.

Longtime neighbor Trudy Austin has a long history with Pope High. She once worked there and her son went to school there.

She worries since the roundabout will be the school’s only in-and-out, it creates a dangerous situation in an emergency and could create a chaotic scene when it opens on the first day of school.

“I don’t think anyone knows the rules with the roundabout, students are always on their phone I see that even whether they’re walking or even driving,” she said.

But the hope is this will smooth what has been a difficult traffic situation on Hembree Road.

Neighbor Jacobs hopes it will slow students who often speed out of the school, if it is ready.

“They’re supposed to be done when school gets back in session, so we’ll see what happens,” he said.
