Man shot, killed by authorities after police chase over window tint in Coweta County

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Law enforcement officers in Coweta County were involved in a deadly shooting on Friday afternoon, deputies say.

According to Coweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood, a man pulled up behind deputies on the interstate before revving his engine and speeding past deputies. They say deputies tried pulling him over for a window tint violation, but he sped away.

Coweta deputies and Newnan police chased the suspect before it ended in a crash at the intersection of Herring Road and Palomino Drive just before 2:30 p.m.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has since identified the man killed as 27-year-old Anthony Richard Fields II.

NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene and saw dozens of shell casings surrounding a Corvette that appears to have collided with a Coweta County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

Video obtained by Channel 2 Action News shows the man getting out of the Corvette where he is attacked by a K9.

Sheriff Wood says the suspect had a gun in his hand and raised it up after getting out of the car.

In the video from the scene, several deputies and officers can be heard firing at the suspect several times. He died from his injuries.

Officials say that because of a “threat of life to civilians and law enforcement,” they used “deadly force” at the end of the chase.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that a K-9 was shot, but is expected to survive. A deputy was also taken to the hospital after receiving minor injuries in the crash that ended the chase.
