Covington Checkers restaurant fails health inspection with a 63

COVINGTON, Ga. — UPDATE: The checkers was re-inspected and received a score of 88.

Health violations that included cross-contamination issues led to the inspection failure of a Newton County fast food restaurant.

Customers at the Checkers on Highway 278 told Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge that they were surprised to learn that on Nov. 7, the restaurant got an inspection score of 63.

Customer Marcus Gibbs said that if he had known about the score, he wouldn’t have stopped there.

Among the violations, food was stored in ways that could lead to cross-contamination. That included raw fish patties stored over ready-to-eat hotdogs and raw chicken stored above French fries.

Another violation included tomatoes, cheese and lettuce not held cold enough.

This is the second inspection this year at that Checkers. In April, it got a very high inspection score of 96.

Sbarge went to the Covington drive-thru and the general manager told her they have already fixed the violations.

Sbarge contacted the corporate office for a comment, but had not heard back by the time this story was posted.

The Checkers will be re-inspected this month, and we’ll let you know what that new score is when it's done.
