North Georgia gets early-morning snow

ATLANTA — People in the north Georgia mountains got a wintry mix of snow and ice early Sunday morning.

Channel 2 Action News spoke with some Floridians visiting Fannin County who didn't seem to mind.

The snow was a delightful sight for the tourists who traveled to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Steve Forte braved the cold weather in his shorts with the kids.

"We tried before to get snow and it's like we always miss it so they got it this time,” Forte said.

The heaviest snow fell between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.

People woke up to their homes, cars and ground covered in white.

"It wasn't bad until we got into the Blue Ridge Mountains it started accumulating on the roads and stuff. But it wasn't slick," Forte said.

As the sun came out, the snow melted.

Passengers on the Blue Ridge Railway still had a unique, scenic trip up to McCaysville in store for them.

"It's beautiful and the sights and the river and some of the things that you guys and some of the folks will see today is going to be something that you're not going to capture that often," James Kornas said.

Ed Hickerson knows all about the view. He traveled up the mountain to look for a retirement home.

"I think it's beautiful. I think it's absolutely beautiful. Watched a little basketball last night and got to see the snow,” Hickerson said.

All throughout the morning, we saw Georgia DOT crews out treating the roads and bridges making sure they were safe for drivers.

Storm to hit Northeast; blizzard watch for NYC, Boston

Winter isn't finished with the Northeast yet, either. A powerful storm with high winds and up to a foot of snow is expected to hit the region this week.

The National Weather Service said Saturday there's a blizzard watch for coastal regions including New York City and Boston for Monday night into Tuesday.

There's also a winter storm watch for an area that includes much of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, upstate New York and New England.

The severe weather comes after the region saw temperatures hit the 60s last week.

The blizzard watch for the New York metro area includes the city plus Long Island, coastal Connecticut and southern Westchester County.

A blizzard watch is in effect for southern Rhode Island and coastal Massachusetts from Boston to Plymouth.
