Woman walks in on man burglarizing her home

KENNESAW, Ga. — A Cobb County woman, who walked in on a burglar ransacking her home Tuesday, ended up in the hospital after the home invader ran her over while trying to escape.

It happened in the middle of the morning at the woman's home near Kennesaw.

"This is our neighborhood. We're all really tight around here and watch out for each other’s backs, and we know when someone gets affected. We all feel it,” said neighbor Shane McPherson.

McPherson says when he heard the police were in his neighborhood, he dashed home. %

McPherson says his across-the-street neighbor walked in on the burglar holding an arm full of the family’s electronics. When she screamed, he took the only way out.

"When she caught him, from what I understand, he basically bull-rushed her and knocked her out of the way and went on foot somewhere,” McPherson said.

Neighbors took her to the hospital while police searched for the burglar. They say his track ended a few streets away and then disappeared.

Police say they weren’t surprised that the burglary happened in the middle of the day.

Daytime home break-ins have been rising with the temperatures this season. Earlier this month, Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt was with police when they caught three people in a home near Old Alabama Road. A neighbor saw them go inside and called 911.

In the same neighborhood, several other daylight home break-ins have gone unsolved.

“It’s easier during the day because people are at work. They generally don’t want any confrontation so they’ll knock on the door and if nobody comes to the door, it’s free game,” said Alicia Chilton with the Cobb County Police Department.

Police say the burglar got into the home Tuesday through an unlocked rear door.
