Teen to serve 2 life sentences in double murder case

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News had the only camera in the courtroom Thursday when a teenager was sentenced to two life sentences for a double murder he committed when he was 14 years old.

Jaydon Reid, now 17, took a plea deal and admitted to the crime.

Reid shot and killed Sterling Hargave and Terrance Banks during a drug deal in 2014.%

“One of whom was deceased in the passenger seat of the vehicle, another of the deceased victims had tried to flee the vehicle and was shot twice in the back,” a prosecutor said.

Initially Reid was charged with double murder and 21 other charges, including dealing drugs and robbery while associated with a street gang.

“At the time of this incident he was less than 100 pounds -- according to the book-in sheet he weighed 89 pounds was around 5 feet 1 inch or so,” said defense attorney Jim Berry.

As part of the plea deal, Reid was sentenced to two life sentences plus 15 additional years.

Judge Ann Harris told Reid he has the rest of his life to think about what he did.

“At some point you were hanging with the wrong crowd. But at some point you became the wrong crowd, sir, and there are two people who are dead now,” Harris told Reid.

The victims’ parents were in the courtroom for the hearing.

“There were no words,” Hargrave’s mother told Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston, wiping away tears.

With the plea deal, Reid is eligible for parole, but with a sentence of two life terms plus 15 years, no one was sure when that might be.
