SUV crashes into Marietta Waffle House

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An SUV plowed into a Waffle House at the height of lunchtime in Cobb County Wednesday.

The accident happened on Sandy Plains Road near Post Oak  Trail.

Hannah Shlapak was meeting her mom at the restaurant Wednesday afternoon when she heard the boom of the newer-model Honda Element crashing through the front glass of the restaurant.

“The workers were running around making sure everyone outside was OK," Shlapak said. %

A Waffle House spokesperson told Channel 2’s Liz Artz that there were no serious injuries from the crash.

Shlapak said she rushed to the side of a woman who was in the parking lot.

"An older lady fell down out here, scared of the noise," Shlapak told Artz.

Police said the driver, a man in his 60s, had just finished lunch with his wife when it happened.

Shlapak shared a picture of the man right after the accident. He told police his car went forward instead of in reverse.

“He seemed calm. I think he was mostly embarrassed, which is understandable," Shlapak said.

The restaurant is working to make sure the building is structurally sound before it repairs the windows and reopens.
