Police: Wet roads played a role in crash that killed mother and young son

COBB COUNTY — Police in Cobb County say wet roads played a role in a crash that killed a mother and her young son.

The roads were wet Tuesday when the crash happened because of Tropical Storm Irma.

Authorities say 32-year-old Odyssey Abdur-Raheem lost control of her car on Windy Hill Road near Austell Road in Marietta at around 5 p.m. Her son also died in the crash.

Her eight and nine-year-old daughters were also in the car.

"She was a beautiful girl. She didn't deserve to die this way," said Abdur-Raheem's mother.

Abdur-Raheem's mother spoke to Channel 2's Matt Johnson about her heartbreak.

"I think about her every day," she said.

Her family says she swerved to avoid something in the road and veered into oncoming traffic before a truck hit her car.

The 8 and 9-year-old daughters survived but their grandmother says it hasn't been easy for everyone.

"I think it's going to affect them the rest of their life, losing their mom. Their mom was very close to them," she said.

Abdur-Raheem's family says driving on road soaked roads will be a reminder of the young mother they lost.

"Everybody should just take precautions and slow down," she said. "She loved her babies so much, without them, it was nothing."

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family.
