KSU to interview AG Sam Olens for new president

KENNESAW, Ga. — After weeks of speculation, Channel 2 Action News has confirmed the Georgia University System’s Board of Regents will interview Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens for the job of president of Kennesaw State University.

University Chancellor Hank Huckaby sent an email to KSU students, faculty and staff Monday afternoon stating his decision to interview Olens.%

“I have asked the Board of Regents to consider Attorney General Sam Olens for the role of president of Kennesaw State University,” Huckaby wrote in the email.  “Initially, I was planning to conduct a national search to find the next president of Kennesaw State.  Yet, through sincere and earnest conversations with Mr. Olens, I now believe he should be considered at this time.”

At the same time the email came out, hundreds of current and former students, along with faculty and staff protested Monday against the possibility of Olens becoming KSU’s next president.

“I don’t think he has any idea how to run a university,” said demonstrator Lane Hunter.  “I don’t think he’s done anything similar to that at all.”

Many demonstrators said they were demonstrating against Olens lack of support for same-sex marriage and his opposition to a White House directive allowing transgendered persons from using bathrooms of choice.

“The one thing I heard about him was that he was against the LGBTQ community, so I decided that since I am a part of that community, I wouldn’t want him as president,” said KSU student Cameron Walker.

The Board of Regents will interview Olens Tuesday afternoon.  The Attorney General’s Office had no comment.
