Georgia veteran receives letter telling her she's dead

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A U.S. Air Force veteran received a letter saying that she was dead, and all benefits and compensation had been stopped.

Dorothy Evans received the letter May 12 from Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

Evans told Channel 2's Craig Lucie that she is extremely upset and wonders "what in the world is going on."

“They are talking about I was deceased expressing sympathy as well,” Evans said.

After the letter arrived, Evans keeps receiving dozens more when she walks to her mailbox.

This is a letter from my credit union on my death saying all the money will be taken out of the account,” Evans said.

Evans served our country for 21 years, nine months and 18 days. Her new assignment -- figuring out how to pay off her car and home since her benefits like her pension have been terminated.

“I would like my benefits reinstated, find out whatever went wrong so it doesn’t happen to someone else,” Evans said.

Lucie reached out the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and they told him they are working on her case right now to fix the situation. They say there was an obvious mix-up, and Evans told Lucie what it could be.

“I know that Dorothy J. Evans lived in Seattle and that’s what I discovered so far,” Evans said.

Evans said someone called the VA and told them Dorothy J. Evans was dead, but she says they should have asked more information from the caller, like that  Dorothy Evans' Social Security number.
