Cobb County superintendent tours schools on first day

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Class is back in session for thousands of students across the metro area, including in Cobb County.

Cobb County Schools’ Superintendent Chris Ragsdale toured three schools on the district’s first day back Monday.

Channel 2’s Liz Artz spoke to Ragsdale at Lost Mountain Middle School, who said the morning went off without a hitch.

Lost Mountain Middle School was one of three schools he toured to start the school year.

Ragsdale greeted parents and students as they got off the bus and stopped in several classrooms.

He said the first day of school is always exciting, and he enjoys getting into the schools to see how they are running.

He told Artz that he has heard from several parents about the school calendar, but other than that, expects a relatively normal school year.

Allen Mack, a Cobb County dad, was at Lost Mountain Middle School while Ragsdale was touring the building. Mack said his eighth-grader could not be more excited for the first day of school and his last year as a middle schooler.

"This is great that he's coming out here and not just some guy in an officer somewhere," Mack said. "Everybody is still in great mood, straight A's football teams undefeated, it's exciting.

Ragsdale told parents they need to be aware of the extended day on Aug. 21 with the solar eclipse as the district will be delaying school by 45 minutes to keep kids safe and let them learn a little about something that may only come once in the students' lifetime.

Ragsdale said it would also serve as a teachable moment, and that the eclipse will be broadcasted from Kennesaw Mountain High School.

"We're actually going to be able to stream the eclipse live and we're excited to take advantage of technology," Ragsdale said.
