Chase on busy interstate ends with fiery crash, police officer hurt

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are looking for the people who led them on a chase on Interstate 75 that injured an officer.

Both the officer’s patrol car and the suspects’ stolen van smashed head-on into a concrete median around 1:30 a.m. Monday. The stolen van caught fire during the crash.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach learned two people stole the van from a non-profit in DeKalb County.

Police said it all started when the suspects drove to a Walmart on Holly Springs Parkway, where they stole a number of electronics.

After leaving the store, an officer tried to pull the van over for a traffic violation.

That led to a chase for about 15 miles down I-575 from Cherokee County into Cobb County, where troopers and other officers joined in.

An officer crashed after doing a PIT maneuver to end the chase on I-75.

Channel 2 Action News was there as firefighters worked to put out the fire and as the van was towed away. Police did find the stolen, charred electronics in the van, but they are still looking for the suspects.
