Fire truck caught in crossfire; Firefighter almost hit

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police continue to search for suspects in a bizarre Marietta shooting that left a fire truck with a bullet hole near where a firefighter sat.

Some of the firefighters on the ladder truck heard something, but it wasn't until they made it back to their Powers Ferry fire station did they realize how close of a call it was the bullet lodged just over the crew cabin, where one firefighter had been sitting.

Police think the fire crew was simply caught in crossfire of some sort of dispute at this Delk Road store.

Ruente Hampton is a regular there.

"Every day I come up here and not see anything, but hearing something like that bothers me that kinda scares me to not want to come up here and sit sometimes," Hampton said.

Images from the store's camera captures the moment police think the shooting happened. A group of men at one side of the store splits up and walks off camera. Moments later the ladder truck, heading home from a call, glides by on Delk Road.

Investigators later found several shell casings in the area and are processing more video and evidence for clues.

Residents are saddened a group of firefighters protecting life and property almost lost theirs.

"They're out there trying to take care of business and trying to make a better home for their wife and kids also, and that means a lot when they're out there working hard and to get caught in the crossfire like that when people don't act civilized and probably fighting over nothing in the first place," Hampton said.
