Bizarre chased ends with suspect Tased, driver dead

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County police have called in two outside agencies to investigate a bizarre encounter between a speeding driver and an officer.

It ended on Roswell Road with a violent wreck, a Taser shot and the driver dead.

“The (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) will be the ones to investigate that just like it was an officer-involved shooting,” said security expert Brent Brown with Chesley Brown International.

Brown said calling in the GBI to investigate the death and the Georgia State Patrol to investigate the wreck is pretty much standard procedure these days.

The driver of the white mini-van died apparently not from the violent accident but from an altercation with an officer afterwards.

It had started in bizarre fashion.

Police said it was in the early morning hours Friday when a police cruiser passed a white minivan on Roswell Road, only to have that van pass the police cruiser seconds later at a high rate of speed.

As the officer tried to catch up to the minivan he came up to the accident scene involved the van.

The wreck knocked out the minivan’s driver. The people in the other car were not seriously hurt.

But when the minivan’s driver suddenly came to, police said he leaped out of the vehicle and fought with the officer, who freed himself and used his Taser to subdue the attacker.

As paramedics tended to him, the driver went into cardiac arrest and died.

“At this stage there is no determination whether or not the Taser caused the death, aggravated the death, what the person was on, if he intoxicated or high on other types of substances that might have been magnified by the Taser. That again is why you do an investigation and why an outside agency is the one doing that investigation,” Brown said.
